Is SEO Really SEO Anymore?

Recently, the game-changer to rule them all occurred; as we know, search engines have moved social. For SEO content developers, this means we’ve got to get our content onto social networking platforms. And in order to do this, it’s got to get used, and it’s got to keep the user in mind. But there’s another less visible game-changer on the horizon as well, and it’s one that could be every bit as consequential for the practice of SEO.

We all know it, we’ve all used it, but so far we haven’t been talking too much about what it means for what we do. It is the search feature in the mobile app markets. Allow me to explain. Sometimes, in order to determine what the future of an industry is, it helps to watch the moves of the biggest players. So when Apple makes an acquisition, I like to pay attention.

Last weekend I read an article on Tech Crunch that stated that Apple recently bought a platform called Chomp for an undisclosed amount. Chomp is a platform which allows people to organize their apps. This article states that over 25 billion apps have been downloaded since the creation of the Apple APP Store. And currently, it says, there are over 500,000 apps being offered. With an apps explosion like this occurring, Now, as we know, search engine optimization—our industry—came to be when business owners had websites that had to be found on the SERPs. So we identified the algorithms and discovered tips and tricks that helped our clients gain visibility on search engines. But what if someday soon, that isn’t what we do anymore? (Not all we do, anyway.)

How to Become Digg Power user? This time make it better

Before you move further do remember there is no shortcut to success and if you are reading this to promote only your posts I will rather say this is just an article which gives you some power tip which help you understanding Digg better and help us to make it more beautiful community.

It’s most common thing that people say that it is as easy to get on the Digg front page just dugg and dugg. For those people I will say it’s never the way and it’s never will.

It’s true that story submitted by a power user is recognized more but you can’t take things for granted that It will make a Front page without good article and reliable resources.

Now what do I mean by reliable sources :

It’s very true that there are few white listed websites like Mashable, blog.wired and many more which require less Digg to make FP then other sites and if we start talking about the discrimination on it that can lead us to endless debate.

I can justify the concept of white listed website as right from Digg point of view and I can also justify it as a wrong decision from a normal user point of view.

I have joined Digg almost an year ago though i was not using it for a while but an old profile helped me a lot.
People always suggested me that Stumble upon is more powerful then Digg and that’s why because the traffic from Digg is not ever lasting where as Stumble upon traffic last for long time.

I would not have supported Digg but then when one of my other blog post made homepage and then the Google analytic stats gone made almost 20K click in a single day.

Then i started looking back to things in more analytic way, went through my history and submission and all the details related to my Digg account and finally i got to know few things and thought i should share it with my readers.

First of all Digg is a powerful tool which can make your blog and can break your blog so its very important that you should use it wisely.

There is no shortcut for anything, so you have to spent some quality time on Digg. It is very true Digg need quality time and it’s up to you if you want to be a part of it or not.

My suggestion before start submitting anything understand digg for almost 2 weeks. Understand what kind of quality people are actually looking for, what is blogspam and then most important understand the simple concept of digg.

Oh yes I forget to mention do read the Digg TOS else you might feel bad later when your account might get deleted and banned for violation of any of these TOS. This is what happened to many of the Digg users.

Many of you have joined Digg to promote stuff but don’t forget majority is the people who joined Digg because of interest and who scan everything before it make a Front page.

Digg has two button Digg and bury. I will rather call Digg as Digg bury game where if you enjoy something Digg else bury. One more important thing to understand why Digg made so many category so that people can select there own niche. Though for becoming a power user you don’t have to stick to it because in the end you have to face the harsh truth that you going to Digg a lot. Stuff which you never read and things you have no interest you are going to Digg them because there is a part of give and take relation on Digg.

Anyways getting back to the point,

I have seen many people who have 1001 friends, sounds great !!Not worthy
No you are wrong, because even they have 1000 friends but still they have hardly 100-150 mutual friends and that’s the catch. Read more

Why SEO Alone is Not Enough

I stumble upon this article from submitexpress.com and it helps me improve to understand the general rules about Internet Marketing.

When it comes to search engine optimization, one thing is true: shift happens. The landscape is continually changing, as evidenced by recent movement in the search engine industry. Will the partnership between Microsoft Bing and Yahoo! impact search or create a long-term competitor to Google? And will the new initiatives that Google rolls out in response impact the search placement of other companies? These are all questions that have been raised in recent years.

It's instructive to look at a typical Google search result to see how much things have changed recently. For example, when you do a search for the "xbox 360" on Google, you get more than just organic results from sites that mention those words. What you see is a broad range of content including news, paid advertising, product feeds and social media results (see image below). This means that you need to concentrate on more than just increasing your organic search placement if you want your Internet marketing plan to succeed.

6 Ways to Use Google's Backlink Data

Here are 6 ways to make backlink information work for you. (read full article here)

1. Find your link-bait. You might find that you have several links to an article that you never even promoted. This is a hint that the article may be of interest to a wider audience and that you should spend some time promoting it to get even more hits.

2. Create More Good Stuff. Once you've discovered which pages attract links you didn't even intend, figure out how to create similar pages with similar content and form that might attract an audience. The hard work in this scenario comes from discovering the characteristics that your popular pages have in common and duplicating it rather than promoting your articles.

3. Optimize. If you find that a page you haven't intentionally promoted has garnered a lot of links, capitalize on the link strength of that particular page. Optimize it for other keywords, or just optimize it if you haven't done it already.

4. Identify Those Linking to You. Some of the sites that link to you won't come as a surprise. After all, they're in your niche or they're interested in the same things you are. But you might be surprised by some of your links. Google sites related to those that are linking to you unexpectedly and see if you can get similar sites to link to you as well.

5. Find Out What Pages Others Are Linking To. If another site is linking to one of your pages, maybe they'd also be interested in other pages as well. Why have them link to just one page on your site when they can link to five or six?

6. Use Article Directories. If you're serious about SEO, then you should be submitting articles to directories religiously. You may find sites that have picked up your articles without you knowing it. Find out if those sites would like you to submit articles right to them and eliminate the middle man of the directory.

Legitimate Link Building Strategies

In search engine optimization, "off page" factors have become more and more important as they relate to rankings. In particular, solid link popularity can literally make or break a site with the search engines.

Before we go any further, what is "link popularity"? In very simplistic terms, link popularity refers to the number and quality of the incoming links that are pointing to your site. These other sites consider your site important enough to link to. So, in the engine's view, your site is considered important as well. What is meant by "link popularity" can get much more complex, which is discussed further in this article.

However, one of the most difficult areas of SEO is building link popularity. Why? Because the engines don't want "artificially created" (or useless) links, so there are no easy ways to build link popularity. The days of link farms and huge link exchange programs are over. Try those strategies now and you can easily find yourself booted out of an engine.

Rather, the engines want links from authoritative sites, or links from sites that share the same focus as your site.

But besides the link popularity you gain by getting an authoritative site to link to you, you also gain additional visibility for your Web site. So, when working on building link popularity, don't forget those two basic reasons for requesting links. Read in full details

Dynamic URLs vs. Static URLs

The Issue at Hand
Websites that utilize databases which can insert content into a webpage by way of a dynamic script like PHP or JavaScript are increasingly popular. This type of site is considered dynamic. Many websites choose dynamic content over static content. This is because if a website has thousands of products or pages, writing or updating each static by hand is a monumental task.

There are two types of URLs: dynamic and static. A dynamic URL is a page address that results from the search of a database-driven web site or the URL of a web site that runs a script. In contrast to static URLs, in which the contents of the web page stay the same unless the changes are hard-coded into the HTML, dynamic URLs are generated from specific queries to a site's database. The dynamic page is basically only a template in which to display the results of the database query. Instead of changing information in the HTML code, the data is changed in the database.

But there is a risk when using dynamic URLs: search engines don't like them. For those at most risk of losing search engine positioning due to dynamic URLs are e-commerce stores, forums, sites utilizing content management systems and blogs like Mambo or WordPress, or any other database-driven website. Many times the URL that is generated for the content in a dynamic site looks something like this:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date

A static URL on the other hand, is a URL that doesn't change, and doesn't have variable strings. It looks like this:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/the-challenges-of-dynamic-urls.htm

Static URLs are typically ranked better in search engine results pages, and they are indexed more quickly than dynamic URLs, if dynamic URLs get indexed at all. Static URLs are also easier for the end-user to view and understand what the page is about. If a user sees a URL in a search engine query that matches the title and description, they are more likely to click on that URL than one that doesn't make sense to them.

A search engine wants to only list pages its index that are unique. Search engines decide to combat this issue by cutting off the URLs after a specific number of variable strings (e.g.: ? & =).

For example, let's look at three URLs:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=67890&sort=date
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=13579&sort=date

All three of these URLs point to three different pages. But if the search engine purges the information after the first offending character, the question mark (?), now all three pages look the same:

http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php
http://www.somesites.com/forums/thread.php

Now, you don't have unique pages, and consequently, the duplicate URLs won't be indexed.

Another issue is that dynamic pages generally do not have any keywords in the URL. It is very important to have keyword rich URLs. Highly relevant keywords should appear in the domain name or the page URL. This became clear in a recent study on how the top three search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN, rank websites.

The study involved taking hundreds of highly competitive keyword queries, like travel, cars, and computer software, and comparing factors involving the top ten results. The statistics show that of those top ten, Google has 40-50% of those with the keyword either in the URL or the domain; Yahoo shows 60%; and MSN has an astonishing 85%! What that means is that to these search engines, having your keywords in your URL or domain name could mean the difference between a top ten ranking, and a ranking far down in the results pages.

The Solution
So what can you do about this difficult problem? You certainly don't want to have to go back and recode every single dynamic URL into a static URL. This would be too much work for any website owner.

If you are hosted on a Linux server, then you will want to make the most of the Apache Mod Rewrite Rule, which is gives you the ability to inconspicuously redirect one URL to another, without the user's (or a search engine's) knowledge. You will need to have this module installed in Apache; for more information, you can view the documentation for this module here. This module saves you from having to rewrite your static URLs manually.

How does this module work? When a request comes in to a server for the new static URL, the Apache module redirects the URL internally to the old, dynamic URL, while still looking like the new static URL. The web server compares the URL requested by the client with the search pattern in the individual rules.

Please visit Dynamic URLs vs. Static URLs for complete explanation.

SEO is ever an Absolute

Base your search optimization on facts, and not on myths or misconceptions! And always remember that nothing about SEO is ever an absolute.
by Sharon Housley

A "myth" is a traditional story, idea, or explanation which is widely accepted, but actually untrue or unproven. Misconceptions can also be described as modern-day myths. When it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the myths and misconceptions are abundant. We will try to dispel some of the more common Search Engine Optimization myths here...

Myth #1 - SEO Is A One-Time Deal

Search engine optimization is an ongoing process that requires attention and effort over an extended period of time. To do it properly, it is an ongoing process, and definitely not a one-time action.

Myth #2 - Quantity Is More Important Than Quality

When it comes to backlinks, quantity is simply not as important as quality. Attracting a huge number of backlinks is simply not as important as obtaining relevant links from related and trusted sources.

Myth #3 - Meta Tags Are No Longer Relevant

While meta tags are not the be-all and end-all of search marketing, they still matter. Including a unique and keyword-rich title and description on each page of a website will help the site rank better in organic search results for those terms. Meta tags may not be as important as they once were, but they do still matter in the world of search optimization.

Myth #4 - PPC Will Help Search Ranking

There is no association between PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising campaigns and how well a website ranks in organic search results. There is simply no evidence to suggest that advertising via AdWords will help improve an organic search ranking.

Myth #5 - Submit Your Website Early And Often

Submitting your website to search engines is no longer a necessity. Search engines use spiders to follow links on a website.

Myth #6 - SEO Is A Scam

Search engine optimization, when done properly, is quite effective. In fact, a website may have a difficult time ranking well at all if it is not optimized adequately.

Myth #7 - SEO Is A Guarantee

As the old saying goes, the only things guaranteed in life are death and taxes. When properly implemented, SEO can very likely improve your organic search rankings. But be leery of any search marketing company that makes guarantees. There are simply too many factors and variables for SEO success to be guaranteed.

Myth #8 - Build It And They Will Come

Once upon a time, before the Internet became so cluttered, you could build something new and interesting and it would attract attention without any effort. But now, with the noise ratio so high on the Internet, you must work to draw attention to your innovation. Do not assume that people will find it simply because it is cool!

Myth #9 - NoFollow Links Are A Waste Of Time

Acquiring links that are tagged as "NoFollow" are not a waste of time. A mix of both DoFollow and NoFollow links looks far more natural to the search engine algorithms than a website that has all DoFollow or all NoFollow links. Additionally, some search marketing studies suggest that not all search engines pay attention to the NoFollow attribute, and they do in fact value a NoFollow link the same way that they would value a DoFollow link.

Myth #10 - Google Is The Only Search Engine

While it is true that Google is by far the largest search engine, a decent volume of web traffic can still be generated by achieving a high ranking in other search engines for competitive search terms.

Base your search optimization on facts, and not on myths or misconceptions! And always remember that nothing about SEO is ever an absolute.

Next Important factor is getting links from reputable sites. It will be good if the website that links to your site is reputable. Means, if you are getting links from the page which has high Page Rank it will be good for sites.

Twitter tools that can help you manage your profiles

Managing your followers and friends on Twitter is not easy. But its a fact that your success ratio and influence power is directly proportional to how active your followers are. I’ve realized that rather than who follows you or how many people follow you, its important to know whom you are following and how active they are.

Some of the factors that will determine your influence power on Twitter are
- How active your followers are.

- Do they ReTweet your tweets.

- Whether they are regularly updated and have a good following.

- Are those whom you follow, following you back etc.

With the default options on Twitter, its not really easy to manage your followers, but here are some interesting web based applications that I found to be of great help. Hope you find them useful too.

1. Mass Unfollow those who are not following you back with Huitter

I believe that there is no use in following people who aren’t reciprocating on Twitter. I use this tool weekly, to check for people who aren’t following me back. It automatically unfollows everyone who aren’t following you back. Huitter. mass-unfollow-tool-huitter

2. Automatically unfollow all inactive accounts you are following with MyCleener

This is yet another tool that will help us automatically unfollow all the inactive accounts based on when their last tweet was, and help you save your follow number. MyCleener

3. Find out common users following and being followed by two accounts

This is a great tool, because if you knew two power user accounts, say from your niche, then you can find out who are the guys they keep in contact with and who are the guys they are following and followed by with this tool. Running this tool with maximum five accounts will more or less reveal the “hidden” circle among them. Very effective if you know whom to stalk. Who follows whom who-follows-who

4. Manage your friends and followers with tags

This tool lets you rate and tag your friends and filter them on a timeline! You can also create custom groups of your followers and filter you timeline by that group. Very effective, but a little complicated to use. Twittangle twittangle1

5. Unfollow people who have not updated within “X” amount of days

This is one of the best ones out there. It lets you find out the tweeps out of your followers who have not updated within a specified number of days (you can decide how many days is it) and lets you unfollow them. Extremely helpful when it comes to keeping your followers group healthy. Untweeps unfollow-inactive-users

6. Find out which Tweet made you popular and which one un-popular

One of the things that’s frustrating about Twitter is the un availability of a tracking mechanism. I personally would like to know what was that one tweet that got me popular and which is the one tweet after which people unfollowed me. Very effective in finding out what people expect from you and what they don’t. This tool helps you find just that. Tweet Rank (it’s German, you may want to translate it to English.) tweet-rank

7. Find out your ReTweet Rank

ReTweets I believe are a good measure to find out how popular your tweets are. This site picks up all the re-tweeted stories and grades you based on the number of re-tweets. Though its not sure what the algorithm is, its a nice tool to find out where you stand. Retweetrank retweet-rank

8. Find out who’s following who on Twitter

Well basically this tool helps you to find out if those people you are following are following you back or not. Shows you the number of friends, fans and followers. But I use it for a different purpose. If I find out a power user in my niche who is popular and is often re-tweeted, I would like to find whom he is following and what are his sources. Simply use this tool, give in the username and it will show who all are following him, his friends and fans. The good thing is that you can sort them by the number of followers they have. So if you want to steal a power users “precious friends”, this tool comes in pretty handy. ;) Friendorfollow friendorfollow

9. Find out common followers between accounts

If you’re unsure whether to follow someone or not, just use this tool to find out if you have common interests and whether there are guys you are following in common. TwtrFrnd twitterfriend1

10. Find relevant and interesting Twitter users to follow

As I said earlier, a good twitter life is all about following and keeping in company with the most active and interesting Tweeps. And Mr.Tweet is one damn tool that lets you connect with them. I mean, its a very simple concept executed in an awesome way. It shows interesting profiles and stats such as they are active or not, responds to tweets or not and whether they’ll follow you back. Mr.Tweet

mrtweet Most of these tools require username and password, so use them wisely. Hope you like them.

UPDATE

Thanks to Mark, who introduced this tool called Tweepular to me. I wish I had known them before making this list. It is “the” best tool I’ve found so far. It has almost all the features I can think of for managing followers. Do check it out and you’ll quit using all others.
